Course Description: PSYC 2317 is a general but comprehensive introduction to the major types of statistical methods used in research. Statistics are the tools of researchers who seek to make sense of scientific data. This course will introduce you to measures of central tendency, variability, and position, correlation and regression, tests of significance, and non-parametric techniques. This course is an applied data analysis course and is highly quantitative in nature; therefore knowledge of algebraic principles is essential (see below). As such, this course falls under the Foundational Component Area of Mathematics. In this course, you will learn how to use critical thinking skills to select appropriate analyses for specific research questions, perform computational procedures necessary to analyze research data, and communicate the results of those analyses to an audience.
Course Prerequisite: MATH 1314 (College Algebra) or equivalent with a grade of C or higher.
Required Textbook: Walker, J.L., Esser, J.K., & Kirk, E.E. (2004). The basics of introductory statistics (Revised 2nd Ed.). Acton, MA: Copley. ISBN 1-58152-317-3. BRING YOUR TEXTBOOK TO CLASS.
Calculators: You will need a calculator for this course. An inexpensive calculator with statistical functions, e.g., Texas Instruments TI30-IIS, is generally best. BRING YOUR CALCULATOR TO CLASS.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. Apply higher-order/critical thinking and statistical models to represent and solve real-world problems.
2. Represent and evaluate basic statistical information verbally, numerically, graphically, and
symbolically.
3. Interpret research data with formulas, graphs, tables, draw inferences from the results, and
communicate the conclusions.
4. Recognize the applications and limitations of statistical models.
5. Develop the view that statistics is an evolving discipline and understand its connection to other
disciplines that engage in research, including the social, behavioral, and health sciences.

Course Structure and Teaching Methodology:
This course will utilize active and collaborative learning strategies to enhance student mastery. Students are encouraged to become active learners in the classroom by participating in in-class activities, participating out-of-class research experiences, asking questions, and offering reflections that enhance understanding of course concepts. Students will be expected to be prepared for in-class activities by completing reading assignments prior to class meetings. Students are also expected to have resource materials and tools (textbook, calculator, etc.) with them to ensure successful completion of in-class activities. In the event of an announced campus closure in excess of four days due to a hurricane or other disaster, students are expected to login to Lamar Universitys websites homepage (www.Lamar.edu) and Blackboard for instructions about continuing courses remotely.
Expectations of classroom behavior:
Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave the class. Examples of inappropriate behavior include activated cell phones/pagers, texting, frequent episodes of leaving and returning to class, chronic tardiness, eating/drinking noisily in the classroom, prolonged talking, sleeping or reading newspapers during class, and arriving late to class.
Departmental Requirements for Research Participation:
The psychology department requires students taking this course to complete 3 experiments or research reading reports. You may do any combination of experiments and reading reports as long as the total number of requirements is met. You may earn these credits by participating in current research being conducted by faculty and students in the psychology department and/or by evaluating and summarizing research articles obtained from an approved A.P.A. research journal. Instructions for completing research credits and reading reports are posted on the course BlackBoard site. Please note the deadline for the completion of research credits and reading reports. Reading reports and experimental credits are due by ______________. Please note: failure to complete all research participation credits by the appropriate deadlines will result in a grade of I until the credits are completed.

*THE ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY FOR CELLPHONES/PAGERS CAN AFFECT YOUR GRADE*
In this class a zero-tolerance policy will be in place for activated cellphones/pagers. If your cellphone or pager rings or buzzes during class, you will be required to leave class for the current period. If you are taking an exam when your cellphone/pager is activated, you will be required to turn in your exam at that time (that is, you are finished taking your exam). You are welcome to return to class at the next scheduled class period.
Attendance:
Regular class attendance is expected of all students. Each student is accountable for all work missed because of absence. Instructors are under no obligation to make special arrangements for students who have been absent. Should an absence from class be unavoidable, the student is encouraged to obtain lecture notes from a classmate. Lecture notes will not be provided by the course instructor. Attendance data will be monitored and reported to the Financial Aid Department in accordance with state and federal laws but will not count against students course grades.
A student who will miss an exam due to a university sponsored event has the responsibility to make arrangements to take the exam prior to his/her absence. If prior arrangements have not been made in a timely manner, the exam will be treated as a missed exam.
Academic Integrity:
As stated in the Lamar University Student Handbook, Any student found guilty of dishonesty in any phase of academic work will be subject to disciplinary action. Punishable offenses include, but are not limited to, cheating on an examination or academic work which is to be submitted, plagiarism, collusions, and the abuse of resource materials(p. 81). Any student found guilty of academic dishonesty will be awarded a reasonable penalty that may include a failing grade in the course.
The instructor will thoroughly investigate all cases of suspected plagiarism or other academic misconduct and may issue an incomplete (I), even to a graduating senior, while the investigation is underway. Students who wish to appeal the decision may do so as specified in the Lamar University Student Handbook (available at HYPERLINK "http://students.lamar.edu/student-handbook.html" http://students.lamar.edu/student-handbook.html).
Drop/Withdrawal:
Students are responsible for making sure they are properly enrolled in the course. If, at any time, students decide not to participate in the course, it is their responsibility to officially drop or withdraw according to university policy. The academic calendar published on the university website lists drop dates (available at http://events.lamar.edu/academic-calendar-listing.html). Drops or withdrawals after the course begins may carry financial penalties.

Evaluation Methods:
Students will be evaluated with examinations, in-class activities, and a data analysis project. Exams will consist of objective (multiple choice and/or matching items) and data analysis problems. Data analysis problems will often require interpretations of results and their application to a specific research question. Exam questions will come from both in-class material and textbook readings, which means that you will also be tested on material not presented in class. Advanced statistical techniques require mastery of basic statistical concepts. Therefore each exam will be cumulative in nature and rely on foundational concepts developed in the first unit. The exams will be given in class on the days scheduled. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. In the event that a student misses exam 1 or exam 2, their score on the final exam will be used to replace the missing score (that is, the final exam score will be counted twice in the computation of the course grade). In the event that a student misses both exam 1 and exam 2, their score on the final exam will be used to replace one missing exam score and a score of 0 (zero) will be recorded for the second missed exam. Note that a grade of F may be recorded for a student who is absent from the final exam and is not passing the course (Lamar University General Catalog). A student who will miss an exam due to a university sponsored event has the responsibility to make arrangements to take the exam prior to his/her absence. In-class activities require that students be present during the class time in which the activity occurs. Missed in-class activities will result in a score of zero points 0 for the activity. MAKE-UPS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR MISSED IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES.
The data analysis project involves application of critical thinking, statistical/quantitative reasoning, and communication skills to solve and interpret a complex, real-world problem. The data analysis project will be due on April 4, 2017. Addition details and information about the project will be provided in class.
Assignment of Grades: Grades, for students who have completed all 3 required research participation credits by the due date of ____________, will be based on the total number of points obtained (as shown below). Students who fail to complete all 3 required research participation credits by the due date of ______________ will receive an incomplete in the course. Once the missing research participation credits are completed, the student will receive a grade that is ONE FULL LETTER GRADE LOWER than the grade assignments shown below. If a student is failing the course and also fails to complete the 3 research participation credits by the due date, that student will receive a grade of F rather than an incomplete.

Emergency Procedures

Severe Weather:
Follow the directions of the instructor or emergency personnel.
Seek shelter in an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, putting as many walls as possible
between you and the outside.
If you are in a multi-story building, and you cannot get to the lowest floor, pick a hallway in the
center of the building.
Stay in the center of the room, away from exterior walls, windows, and doors.
Violence/Active Shooter (CADD):
CALL - x8311 from a campus phone (880-8311 from a cell phone). Note: Calling 911 from
either a campus phone or cell phone will contact Beaumont City Police Dispatch rather than
University Police.
AVOID- If possible, self-evacuate to a safe area outside the building. Follow directions of police
officers.
DENY- Barricade the door with desks, chairs, bookcases or any other items. Move to a place
inside the room where you are not visible. Turn off the lights and remain quiet. Remain there
until told by police it is safe.
DEFEND- Use chairs, desks, cell phones or whatever is immediately available to distract and/or
defend yourself and others from attack.
CAMPUS CLOSURE: In the event of a campus closure of four more days, this course will be continued online through the courses BlackBoard website. Students should log into the BlackBoard website for this course for further information.
